Today is Alfredo day! Do you know what makes today Alfredo day? It’s the anniversary of our engagement and that’s what Phil cooked me for dinner that night ❤️. Eleven years ago he proposed π and made me Alfredo again tonight.
Last week started out well because Sansa got to have most of her staples taken out! She kept two because they were afraid one spot may reopen but she got them removed this past Monday and her wound healed nicely. The big knot, called a seroma (I remembered to listen to the name this time), will heal on it’s own and doesn’t require anything to be done, even though it looks a little scary. She was still supposed to be wearing her cone all last week but as they were bringing her back out to me after removing her staples she crashed into the wall and shattered cone #2 ππ. I was really amused that it happened there because I think they thought I was just allowing her to be reckless when it happened before. We almost had to have cone #3 but they said if she didn’t bite at it or lick it then she could go without. She was pretty good, only licking occasionally, and I yell at her for that anyway. I can’t stand to listen to a dog licking incessantly. I had to take Soph later that same day that Sansa got the majority of her staples out to get her nails trimmed and she embarrassed me, which is hard to do. She has a new habit of violating humans by sniffing places you don’t want sniffed. And she doesn’t just do it a little bit, she gets her whole nose as close as she can to your body parts. I’m not sure if she just discovered where human butts are or what but this new fetish is annoying and offensive. So anyway, I took her to the vet and the first thing she did was walk up to a stranger and stick her nose underneath the woman’s coat to smell her goods. Maybe she didn’t assault that woman as much as she does us because the lady didn’t respond how I expected her to. Either way, my dog has no manners and I apologize in advance if she sniffs your crack. You’ve been warned.
Anyway, both of our girls had a birthday in the last two weeks! Sophie turned one on November 29 and Sansa turned 3 on Dec. 3. People kept telling us when Sansa was a hellion that she would settled down by the time she turned 3 but I think it happened closer to her 2nd birthday. That means I’m (not so) patiently holding my breath for Sophie’s turn. She definitely gives us a run for our money but they’re the best dogs, you couldn’t ask for better.
We finally put up our tree on Sansa’s birthday. Taking out all our ornaments is what inspired me to write this post, which is about repurposing, Christmas decor edition. When I was little my Grandma babysat my brother and me a lot while my mom worked so I have lots of great memories with her. One thing that I loved doing was making homemade ornaments with her. She saved lids from different containers: pickle jars, milk jugs, anything really, and we found pretty wrapping paper scraps and traced the lids to make a circle. We then cut the paper and glued it into the lid to make an ornament. I’m pretty sure we used dental floss and scotch tape for a hanger π. I wish I still had those today. Anyway, I love that memory because a) she repurposed and b) she was crafty…two of my favorite things! Also, the scraps of wrapping paper that we used were saved by my mom and I kinda wish she didn’t pass that habit onto me because we now store a tote full of scraps that I really wish I could just throw away. But I can’t. *Sigh*. I’ll use them all one day π.
As I’ve mentioned before, I visit my nieces and nephews every week and they’ve kind of come to expect me to bring them a craft. This time of year makes things easier because I have them make ornaments. I hope that they cherish the memories of doing that with me like I did with my Grandma. We recently made ornaments with wine corks and beads and Christmas trees with buttons and fleece. They particularly liked the tree craft because they got to sew. Haleigh learned how to sew in Girl Scouts but Coen and Kate hadn’t done it before so it was a learning experience. Lincoln wanted to try but Lori convinced him to just glue his on, which he did and then proudly told me, “I’m doing a good job!”ππ
While we were decorating our tree I pulled out some ornaments that I’ve made from recyclables or things lying around the house. They’re pictured below:
A shower curtain hook wrapped in shiny pipe cleaners.
Nuts glued together with E6000.
Want to finally do something with all seashells you (or your kids) bring home from the beach? Drill a hole in ‘em and make them into ornaments.
A Mason jar ring wrapped in twine and a lid spray painted with chalkboard paint. The reindeer is a vinyl from my Cricut but just writing an initial on it would be cute, too.
Wine cork ornaments I made with the kids.
With theirs also. Kate thought we needed to spread random beads around it add to the pictureπ.
A cupcake liner, styrofoam ball, glue, fake snow, and a red bead.
We have tons of busted golf balls for some reason. They aren’t good for my game so they get repurposed into snowmen!
Empty stools of thread, white paint, a black paint marker, and a pipe cleaner.
A Jenga block with a paint job and a ribbon scarf.
Our sewing craft. Lincoln’s are in the top right. He did a good job with that glue π.
This isn’t an ornment, it’s a scrap wood snowman decoration.
And another decoration: tin can snowman. I actually have three of these but the green one lost his nose and I haven’t found the blue one yet π€·π»♀️. We have way tooo much Christmas stuff. I’m downsizing this week though! The Annual Community Distribution is this coming up Wednesday and they’re getting plenty of donations from this household!
Finally, this isn’t decor, just an idea. Typically I don’t like using disposable silverware but during the season where you may be having extra company, less dishes=less stress. I collect silverware all year long from fast food places. If I go through a drive thru and eat at home, I don’t need the plastic forks and spoons they give me. I save them for holidays. If you’re not picky about giving your guests plasticware (mine are always welcome to use real silverware if they wish!) then I suggest taking this tip. No need to buy it when it’s already supplied to me!
Last weekend we went to see A Christmas Story in Parkersburg with my adopted family, The Croasmuns. It was great and we had a wonderful time. I missed the Christmas parade this year because of the cold and rain. I try to make it every year but I just wasn’t that dedicated this time. I stayed home and played with the girls. Sansa gets cranky when she doesn’t get her walk in so we have to amuse her with fetch and tug-o-war. Afterward she’s always all cuddles. And jealous ass had to get in the action πππ.
Even when I’m busy and need room to think.
If she’s not sitting ON me, she’s giving me a guilt trip.
This was me TRYING to text Kim and Marsha the other day πππ. Sophie wouldn’t stop getting in my way so I had to hold my phone above her head. As you can see, she still made every effort to involve herself.
When she finally admitted defeat:
And then became a drama queen π.
When one of us aren’t sitting down, Sansa takes a turn. She’s such a good sport. Both were sound asleep
That poor girl gets worn out.
They both looked cute in their birthday hat.
Soph wasn’t a big fan of wearing it though
Sansa didn’t mind though. The promise of a potato chip didn’t hurt either π.
Sansa may be the fat one but Sophie is the biggest pig. She was digging for a spare morsel of food that fell behind the container π.
She does a better job than the Roomba. Speaking of the Roomba, she’s terrified of it and she sat on the ottoman like this while trying to decide if it was going to come eat her or not π
Something else she’s afraid of? Stink bugs. She stared at that thing FOREVER the other night.
Sansa doesn’t like them either but she just barks at them and moves on with her nap schedule.
Anyway, speaking of sleep, it’s about that time for me. I have a busy day tomorrow of attending a training that I’ve attended at least three times before so it should be riveting π. Wish me luck that I learn something new π.
